The Carroll Agreement, which was signed on 14 March 2003 by Dominique Vernay for THALES Research and Technology, Bernard Larrouturou for INRIA and Christian Desmoulins for the CEA, reflects the three-year Research Programme to achieve a common long-term goal, under stringent management, with short- and medium-term objectives.
The Carroll Programme is designed to strengthen, by pooling the expertise and knowledge of the CEA and INRIA, the technological bases of the pilot programmes MIRROR (software engineering) and ALICE (middleware technology) conducted in parallel by the THALES and THALES Research & Technology teams. The results of the Programme are to be collated by software publishers and distributed to other sectors of industry. THALES will thus increase its capacity and competitiveness, enabling it to address the increasing need for the development of software for its complex systems. The Carroll Research Programme is built around existing projects, scientifically monitored and assessed by a management committee and a steering committee. These projects correspond to a scientific context which is central to the mission of the preparation of technology and its transfer in the medium and long term that has been entrusted to Carroll. Carroll's mission notably includes concerted action with its partners to lobby standards organisations, and is characterised by willingness to engage in external work in the context of French and European projects.
The CEA has provided the Programme with its technological research know-how concerning software-based systems and, particularly in the field of on-board systems, its software tools and methods for mastering the complexity of systems. The INRIA has long possessed special skills in the field of real-time on-board computer systems, as well as distributed computing and middleware. For THALES Research and Technology, Carroll represents part of the on-going process of development of its networks of excellence and transfer of technology to the teams, focusing on the priority issues of software engineering and middleware technology.
